Unlike the original which is usually plastic, this version uses a molded plywood shell for warmth and sustainability. The shell is formed from 9 layers of birch veneer, cross-laminated under high heat and pressure, then finished with a natural oak veneer on the exterior and a matching birch veneer on the interior. The result is a thin (12 mm), strong, and beautifully grained shell that flexes slightly under weight for a small amount of ‘give’. The shell is sealed with a matte, water-resistant lacquer. The chair’s single leg is turned from solid American oak, with a clear satin finish and a brushed stainless steel foot cap that prevents floor scratching. The leg attaches to the shell via a central steel mounting plate (concealed). The chair comes with a removable foam cushion covered in a beige cotton blend fabric (80% cotton, 20% polyester). The cushion is 5 cm thick, with a ‘scalloped’ shape that mirrors the contour of the shell. The cushion ties to the shell with two cotton straps and buttons, preventing sliding.
