This open back provides visual lightness while offering surprisingly good lumbar support. The top rail is sculpted to fit the curve of your shoulders, and the bottom rail is contoured. The seat is a solid plank of mahogany, hand-scooped with a shallow depression for comfort, and the front edge is softly rounded to prevent cutting into your thighs. The entire chair is finished with a hand-rubbed satin varnish (a blend of tung oil and polyurethane) applied in six thin coats, with light sanding between coats. This finish is water-resistant and food-safe after curing. The chair legs are turned on a lathe with a classic ring-and-taper profile, and they are braced with corner stretchers for rigidity.
