The frame is carved from solid mango wood (Mangifera indica), a sustainable hardwood that would otherwise go to waste after the tree stops bearing fruit. Each piece of mango wood is kiln-dried to 8-10% moisture content, then given a hand-rubbed honey stain and a protective clear coat that resists water rings and minor scratches. The mango wood’s grain varies from straight to interlocked, often featuring attractive dark mineral streaks. The seat and back are not solid wood, but rather a handwoven pattern of natural rattan core (Calamus rotang). The rattan is harvested from Indonesian jungles, then boiled, peeled, and bent into shape. Each strand is approximately 6 mm thick. The weaving pattern is a classic ‘herringbone’ on the back and a ‘diamond’ on the seat, which provides natural ventilation and a slight flexibility for comfort. No cushions are included in the base design, but two polyester-filled cushions (one seat, one back) are supplied at no extra charge. The cushions are covered in a cream-colored, washable cotton blend (80% cotton, 20% polyester) with a zipper closure. The chair’s legs are slightly splayed for stability, and plastic floor glides are attached to prevent scratching.
